Recruiting a PhD student in Sustainability

We are recruiting a motivated graduate student with a passion for natural resource governance. A successful candidate will be interested in using qualitative and quantitative methods from the social sciences to study social-ecological systems. The student will be enrolled in the PhD program for Sustainability at Arizona State University and affiliated with the Center for Behavior, Institutions and the Environment.
The PhD student will participate in an interdisciplinary project, which will explore the dynamics of freshwater recreational fishery landscapes, where social and ecological processes interact in complex ways to determine the status of fish populations and of the human populations that depend on them. The student project will focus on the study of governance of lakes by lake associations. We will test the proposed Design Principles for successful governance of common resources by Elinor Ostrom on social and ecological data for 50 lakes with lake associations in northern Wisconsin. The PhD student will conduct interviews and surveys with local organizations and identify their institutional arrangements. Furthermore, statistical analysis and qualitative comparative analysis will be used to uncover relationships between governance and ecological outcomes.

The application process requires submission of the formal graduate school application pages, transcripts, GRE scores, three letters of reference, a personal essay, and, for non-native speakers of English, TOEFL or IELTS scores. If admitted to the program, financial support (TA and/or RA) will be provided for 3-5 years. The application deadline is December 15, 2017.

Interested students should contact Dr. Marco Janssen (Marco.Janssen@asu.edu) before formally applying to the graduate school. In your email, please include a CV, unofficial transcripts, and a brief paragraph explaining why you are interested in a PhD in Sustainability, and motivated to study natural resource governance.
